| Writer, painter, and poet, born in Meulebeke, W Belgium. He lived for three years in Italy, and in 1583 settled in Haarlem, The Netherlands, where he opened a school for painters. He combined his paintership with his authorship when he wrote Het schilder-boeck (The Painters' Book), a book about classical, Italian, German, and Dutch painters. |
