| biography:
| Flemish poet and writer, born in Gent, NW Belgium. He worked as a correspondent for the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (New Rotterdam Newspaper), then as a civil servant in various positions, and became lecturer in Dutch literary history in Gent. His work is neo-Romantic and symbolic, moving towards a more spiritual and mystical approach, expressing his extreme sensitivity in long, baroque phrases. Central themes are love and death, and his struggle between body and mind. He is considered one of the best Flemish writers of the 20th-c. |
