| Writer, born in Schwadonitz, W Czech Republic, the brother of Josef Čapek. He is remembered above all for his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), produced in 1921, showing mechanization rampant. With his brother he wrote the comic fantasy Ze Života hmyzu (1921, The Insect Play), one of several pieces foreshadowing totalitarianism, as well as short stories on crime and mystery, prophetic science-fiction, and travel-books. |
