| biography:
| Leader of the Serbians in their struggle for independence and founder of the dynasty of Karadjordjević, born in Viševac, Serbia, the son of peasants. His nickname arose from his dark complexion. He led a revolt against Ottoman Turkey, and in 1808 was elected governor and recognized as Prince of Serbia by the sultan, Selim III (ruled 1789–1807). When Turkey regained control of Serbia in 1813, Karageorge was exiled. When he tried to return, he was murdered at the instigation of his rival, Prince Milosch Obrenović (ruled 1815–39). |
