| biography:
| Indian founder of the Samkhya school of Hindu philosophy. An almost legendary figure, said to have spent the latter half of his life on Sagar I at the mouth of the Ganges, he is held to be the originator of the philosophical system presently expounded in the 3rd–5th-c AD commentary of Iśvarakrishna and the Samkhya Sutra (c.1400 AD). It is notable for parallels with Buddhist thought, and for a theory of evolution or constant ‘becoming’ of the world. |
