| biography:
| Essayist and novelist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. With J Bernlef and G Brands, he co-founded the literary magazine Barbarber. He is influenced by the ideas of Dadaism and the way Dadaist artists, such as Duchamp and Schwitters, demystified the essence of art. This is reflected in Schippers' work, which continuously questions the relation between art and reality, an issue which never ceases to fascinate him and resulted in contemplative essays on art, collected in De berg en de steenfabriek (1986, The Mountain and the Brickworks) and Museo sentimental (1989). In 1996 he was awarded the P C Hooft-prijs for his contemplative prose. |
