biography: Footballer, born in Göppingen, W Germany. He began his career in 1982 with second division club Stuttgart Kickers, later joining Vfb Stuttgart. In 1988 he became top scorer of the Bundesliga (German Football League) and was voted German Player of the Year. Among later clubs are Inter Milan, Monaco, and Bayern Munich. He also had two successful spells with English Premier side Tottenham Hotspur (1994–5, 1997–8), and was voted English Player of the Year in 1995. International honours include captaining Germany to win the European Championship (1996), and victory in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He also played in the 1994 finals, scoring five goals, although Germany were knocked out in the quarter-finals. He announced he would retire after the 1998 World Cup, where he scored three goals as Germany once again bowed out in the quarter-finals. During his career he gained 108 caps and scored 47 goals.
