| Finnish statesman, prime minister (1918, 1944–6), and president (1946–56), born in Tampere, SW Finland. He became Conservative prime minister after the civil war in 1918, recognized the need for friendly relations with Russia, and took part in all Finnish–Soviet negotiations. He sought to avoid war in September 1939, conducted the armistice negotiations, later becoming prime minister again and president. |
