| Sri Lankan statesman, prime minister (1977–8), and president (1978–89), born in Colombo, W Sri Lanka. He studied law in Colombo, and became a member of the State Council (1943) and the House of Representatives (1947). He was honorary secretary of the Ceylon National Congress (1940–7), minister of finance (1947–53), and vice-president of the United National Party. He led his Party in Opposition, both as deputy leader (1960–5) and Leader (1970–7), before becoming prime minister and president. |
