| Chemist, born in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA, the brother of Alfred Stieglitz. He was affiliated with the University of Chicago (1892–1933), and his research in such fields as molecular rearrangements and stereochemistry helped lay the foundations of physico-organic chemistry. During World War 1 he advised the government on how to overcome shortages of chemicals which had previously come from Germany. |
