| Austrian statesman and chancellor (1953–61), born in St Pölten, NC Austria. He became an engineer, was a Christian Socialist member of the Austrian Diet (1927–34), and federal minister of trade and transport (1938). He retired from politics during the Nazi regime. In 1945 he was one of the founders of the People's Party, becoming its chairman (1951–60). |
