| Mathematician and physicist, born in Elberfeld, W Germany. He studied at Heidelberg, Berlin, and Paris, and held professorships at Halle, and Bonn. He investigated diamagnetism, originated the idea of spectrum analysis, and in 1859 discovered cathode rays, produced by electrical discharges in gases at low pressures. His mathematical work was concerned with line geometry and algebraic curves. |
