| Chemist, born in Varel, NW Germany. Although trained as a physician, he became the first professor of chemistry at Tübingen in 1876. He discovered the periodic law independently of Dmitri Mendeleyev in 1869, and showed that atomic volumes were functions of atomic weights. |
