| Lawyer, born in Montgomery Co, North Carolina, USA. He was a partner in a law firm (1964–84) in Charlotte, NC. A civil-rights advocate, in 1984 he was named director-counsel of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense and Education Fund, and was a trustee of several national institutions. Representing his private firm and as head of the NAACP's Fund, he won many landmark cases involving the education, employment, and civil rights of African-Americans. |
