| biography:
| Pope, born in Rome, Latium, Italy. He became pope at the death of Paul III (1550), with whom he had previously collaborated. He allied himself with the emperor, and tried to take the duchy of Parma from the Farnese family. He supported the election to the English throne of Mary I. In 1551 he reopened the council of Trento and supported the Jesuits. A patron of the arts, he built Villa Giulia in Rome. |
