| biography:
| Uruguayan statesman and president (1984–90, 1994–2000). A member of the long-established, progressive Colorado Party, he was elected to the Assembly in 1962, then headed the ministries of labour and industry, and education and culture (1969–73). The oppressive regime of Juan Maria Bordaberry (1972–6) was forcibly removed, and military rule imposed, before democratic government was restored in 1984. He was then elected president, but was defeated in 1990 by Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera. He won back the presidency in 1994. |
