| Film actress, born in Paris, France. After an early start in the theatre at the age of 16 she took classes at the Paris Conservatoire in the late 1970s, and after brief appearances on television, she played a number of minor film roles before achieving stardom in André Téchiné's Rendez-vous (1985). After various roles in French films and theatrical productions she received international success with the film version of Milan Kundera's novel, The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988). She then went on to make films, including Fatale (1992), and the trio of films directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski: Trois Couleurs Bleu (1993, Three Colours Blue, César best actress), Trois Couleurs Blanc (1994, Three Colours White), and Trois Couleurs Rouge (1994, Three Colours Red). In 1995 she starred in Hussard sur le Toit (Horseman on the Roof), the most expensive film made in France to that date, costing $35 million. Later films include The English Patient (1996, Oscar for Best Supporting Actress), Chocolat (2000), and La Veuve de Saint-Pierre (2000, The Widow of Saint-Pierre). |
