| biography:
| Jurist and community leader, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He earned his law degree at Harvard, and taught law at Northwestern University (1895–1902) and at the University of Chicago (1902–11). He served as a US circuit court judge from 1913 until his death. President of the Zionist Organization of America (1918–21), he was leader of the ‘Brandeis-Mack group’ which favoured investment rather than philanthropy for Palestine. |
