| Painter, born in West Point, New York, USA. He studied in Paris (1873), travelled in Europe (1873–83), worked in New York, and settled in Connecticut (1883). A founder of the Ten (1898), an Impressionist group, he is remembered for his paintings such as ‘Idle Hours’ (1888). In 1991 his property in Wilton/Ridgefield, CT was named a National Historic Site, the first artist's home so designated. |
