| Navigator, born in Condé-sur-Noireau, N France. He entered the navy in 1807, and commanded expeditions to survey the South Pacific (1826–9) and the Antarctic (1837–40), discovering Joinville I and Adélie Land. A French Antarctic station is named after him. |
