| biography:
| French politician and lawyer, born in Saint-Dié, E France. He became mayor of Paris (1870–1). Conservative and anti-clerical, as minister of education (1879–83) he made education free and compulsory, banned Jesuits from education, expelled most of the male religious orders from their houses, and forbade degree conferment in Catholic universities. He also brought in freedom of the press, legislation of trade unions, and re-establishment of divorce. His colonial policy brought about his downfall. |
