| Novelist, born in Limoges, C France. While a schoolboy in Paris he published a novel, and soon became a leading critic, political writer, and popular novelist. He first made a hit on the stage with his Revolution plays, Les Muscadins (1874), Le Régiment de Champagne (1877) and Les Mirabeau (1878). In 1885 he became director of the Comédie Française. |
