| biography:
| Theatre director, born in Liverpool, NW England, UK. After graduating from Birmingham University in 1975 she worked as an actress with Michael Bogdanov's Leicester Phoenix Theatre. She began her directing career in 1976 when she founded the Solent People's Theatre, a professional company in Hampshire committed to community touring. After directing 42 of their shows she was appointed artistic director of the Battersea Arts Centre, which she established as a national venue. In 1986 she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company as an assistant director. Whilst there she directed the premier of Lynchville (1986) and the highly acclaimed Sarcophagus (1987). She was appointed artistic director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse (1988–2002). Productions there included Merchant of Venice (1994),Beautification of Area Boy (1996), The Seagull (1998), The Tempest (1998), and Singing in the Rain (2000). She has also directed at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre, the Lyric in Hammersmith, and Chichester Festival Theatre. She is a popular commentator and spokesperson for the arts, making regular appearances on national radio and television. |
