| biography:
| Mystical writer, born in Oropesa, Toledo, C Spain. He studied at Alcalá and was entrusted with high office in the Franciscan Order. His Triumphos del amor de Dios (Medina del Campo, 1590) owing a good deal to Plato's views on love, as well as to St Bonaventure and Sabunde, was revised and abridged as Lucha espiritual y amorosa entre Dios y el alma (1600). His Diálogos de la conquista del espiritual y secreto reyno de Dios (2 vols, 1595) were influenced by the N European mystics, above all by Ruysbroeck and Tauler. His style is perhaps inferior only to that of Luis de León in De los nombres de Cristo. |
