| Aeronautical engineer, born in Murcia, SE Spain. He trained as a civil engineer but became interested in flying, and designed and built a number of gliders and aircraft (1912–19). Following the crash of one of his planes, he developed the autogiro, an aircraft with a freely rotating rotor which provides lift, achieving the first successful flight in 1923. |
