| biography:
| Poet and playwright, born in Porcuna, Andalucia, S Spain. He was taken to Peru when very young and returned to Spain at the age of 20 for only 3 years. The son of a wealthy businessman, he squandered his inheritance and died an alcoholic. His allegories are Entremés del amor alcalde, Baile del amor médico, and Baile del amor tahur. A conceptista poet and disciple of Quevedo, he wrote satirical verse (such as Guerras físicas, proezas medicinales, against doctors), religious verse (including a Carta to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz), and even mystical and lyrical verse. |
