| Playwright and costumbrista, born in Madrid, Spain. His ugliness caused him ridicule, his poverty suffering, and his gout blindness. Influenced by Calderón and Gracián, his principal works are witty and informative descriptions of Madrid society. His didactic works were Problemas de filosofía moral (1652), Errores celebrados en la antigüedad, and Milagros de los trabajos. Of his plays, El ermitaño galán is an advance in style and simplicity on its model by A Mira de Amescua, La mesonera del cielo. El hijo de Marco Aurelio is one of a Roman cycle he did not live to complete, and Osar morir da la vida deals with the redemption of a sinner. Among his other works are Historia de Nuestra Señora de Madrid and Historia y vida del Conde Matisio. |
