| biography:
| Poet, born in Sevilla, SW Spain. He studied at Logroño and Salamanca, travelled in Italy, and was appointed to a canonry in Segovia. Inheriting great wealth from his father, he devoted much of his time and money to the Hospital of St Cosimus and St Damian in Sevilla. His poetry began in the Renaissance style, with echoes of Italian and classical writers, but on his return to Spain he came under the influence of culteranismo, though he is not a mere imitator of Góngora. His poetry avoids the heroic and patriotic, even dismissing romantic passion in favour of a comfortable, worldly life. His works were collected and published between 1647 and 1650 by José Maldonado Dávila de Saavedra. |
