| Spanish courtier poet. He lost favour at the court of Juan II and sought refuge with the sons of Don Fernando de Antequera in Aragón and Navarra. In the company of Don Alfonso de Aragón, he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Ponza in 1435 (the battle which inspired the Marqués de Santillana's Comedieta de Ponza) and while captive in Naples wrote the allegorical octosyllabic La nao de Amor. He was challenged in the Marqués de Santillana's brief Dezir contra los aragoneses to a literary joust in 1429, which provoked his Respuesta. Dueñas is still popular for El pleyto que ovo J. de D. con su amiga, witty verses in dialogue. On his eventual return to Spain, he lived at the court of Doña Blanca, Queen of Navarra. |
