| biography:
| Historian of law, literature, and institutions, born in Elda, Alicante, SE Spain. President of the Supreme Tribunal before the War of Independence, and consequently exiled, he pursued his historical studies while in France in such works as the Histoire des Cortes d'Espagne (1815). He owes his place in the literary annals to the prologue and translation of Muratori's Riflessioni sopra il buon gusto intorno le scienze e le arti (1708) which he produced in 1782. The Spanish version helped to spread Muratori's neoclassical ideas on the need for fantasy to be regulated by the intellect, and led to an expansion of that prologue entitled Ensayo de una biblioteca española de los mejores escritores del reinado de Carlos III (6 vols, 1785–9). |
