| Playwright, born in Taxco de Alarcón, SC Mexico. He trained as a lawyer, and in 1626 became a member of the Council of the Indies in Madrid. He was neglected for generations, but is now recognized as a leading playwright of the Golden Age of Spanish drama. Among his character comedies is La verdad sospechosa (c.1619, The Suspect Truth), the model for Corneille's Le Menteur. |
