| biography:
| Explorer, born in San Servas, Spain. A page at the Aragonese court, he was a member of Columbus's second expedition (1493) and served as deputy to Ovando (1508–9), exploring and settling Puerto Rico (1510). In 1513 he discovered Florida and, while acting governor, occupied Trinidad, but failed to conquer his new subjects, the Carib Indians. On a second expedition to Florida (1521) he returned to Cuba, where he died from a poisoned-arrow wound. |
