biography: Argentinian soldier and president (1946–55, 1973–4), born in Lobos, Buenos Aires. He took a leading part in the army coup of 1943, gained widespread support through his social reforms, and became president in 1946. He was deposed and exiled in 1955, having antagonized the Church, the armed forces, and many of his former Labour supporters. He returned in triumph in 1973, and won an overwhelming electoral victory, but died the following year.
