| Composer, born in Bilbao, N Spain. A child prodigy, his first opera, Los esclavos felices (The Happy Slaves), was produced in 1820. He became assistant professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1824. Although he died at the age of 19, his compositions show remarkable maturity, and include three string quartets and a symphony. |
