| Historian and college president, born in San Francisco, California, USA. An internationally known mediaeval scholar specializing in mediaeval technology and the religious background of industrialism, he studied at Stanford University (1928 BA), Union Theological Seminary (1929 MA) and Harvard (1930 MA; 1934 PhD). He taught at Princeton and Stanford (1933–43), was president of Mills College (1943–58), then taught at the University of California, Los Angeles (1958–74). His books include Medieval Technology and Social Change (1962) and Medieval Religion and Technology (1978). |
