| Philanthropist, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the son of John D Rockefeller. He studied at Brown University, entered his father's business, and from 1910 concentrated on the development of philanthropic institutions. He became chairman of the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research, built the Rockefeller Center in New York City (1939), and restored colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. His gift of land in New York City was instrumental in the siting of the UN headquarters there. |
