| Actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The son of a once-famous stage and film actor, Jason Robards Sr (1892–1963), he served seven years in the US Navy, survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was awarded the Navy Cross. He went to New York City and supported himself by taxi-driving and teaching while gaining experience in television dramas, radio soap operas, and small parts in plays. He gained public and critical acclaim as a stage actor in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh (1956) and Long Day's Journey Into Night (1957), and over the next four decades continued to create a number of distinguished roles on stage. He made his film debut in The Journey (1959), and won Best Supporting Actor Oscars in All the President's Men (1976) and Julia (1977). Later film appearances include Philadelphia (1993), The Paper (1994), Enemy of the State (1998), and Beloved (1998). He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1997. |
