| biography:
| Physicist, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He studied at Columbia University and Cambridge, then taught at Illinois and Columbia universities before joining Harvard in 1947. Influenced by his graduate adviser, Rabi, he pursued his interest in the energy levels of atoms, his research leading to the development of the caesium atomic clock (1960). He shared the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physics. |
