| US governor, born in Hagerstown, Maryland, USA. A lawyer and World War 1 veteran, he purchased newspapers in Hagerstown in 1922. A crusading Maryland attorney general (1930–4), he prosecuted a white lynch mob in 1933. As governor (Democrat, 1947–51), he outlawed Communist Party gatherings, and later chaired the Herald Mail Publishing Co. |
