| US senator, born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Born into a political family, he was elected to the US Senate (Republican, Wisconsin, 1925–47) to serve out his father's unexpired term. A staunch liberal, he supported tax reform, social security, farm relief, and foreign aid. He was defeated in the Republican primary in 1946 by Joseph R McCarthy. |
