| biography:
| US governor, born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA. Starting as an engineer in his father's plumbing appliance company (1924), he became the Kohler Co director (1936), and director of Volrath, stainless steel manufacturers (1940). After serving in the US Navy during World War 2, he went on to serve as governor of Wisconsin (Republican, 1951–7), and instituted programmes to reduce dairy-cattle disease. He later returned to business. His father was a previous governor of Wisconsin (1929–31). |
