| Lawyer and financier, born in New York City, New York, USA. He graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania (1946) and took a law degree from Columbia University in 1950. He worked as an investment banker for Bear Stearns & Co, before becoming a partner in Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (1976–87), known as ‘the kings of the leveraged buyout’.
