| US representative, born in Harrison, New Jersey, USA. After serving in local offices, he became the youngest member of the US House of Representatives (Republican, New Jersey, 1929–49). After the Republican victory in 1946, he became chairman of the Labor Committee, drafting the anti-labour Taft–Hartley Act (1947) which outlawed closed shops and required an anti-Communist oath from labour officials. His write-in campaign for the Senate in 1954 failed, and he retired to cattle farming. |
