| Dutch politician and economist, born in The Hague, W Netherlands, the son of Willem Drees. A civil servant, he was in turn associated with the Central Planning Bureau (1945–7), International Monetary Fund (1947–50), and the Dutch High Commission in Jakarta (1950–3). He was also director of the National Budget (1956–69) and Treasurer General of the Ministry of Finance (1969–-71). He left the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in 1970 to become leader of Democratisch Socialisme (DS '70), and served as minister of transport and waterways (1971–2) but left politics in 1977 when DS '70 won only one seat. In 1977–83 he was a member of the Public Audit Office. |
