| US representative, born in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Interrupting his studies to enlist in the army in 1942, he later attended Wayne College of Mortuary Science, working in the House of Diggs, Inc. A Democratic member of the Michigan senate (1951–4), he served in the US House of Representatives (1955–80) until his resignation. He founded and chaired the Congressional Black Caucus (1969–71) and chaired the Committee on the District of Columbia. |
