| biography:
| Composer, born in New York City, USA. He studied at Harvard University, and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Prizes and fellowships enabled him to alternate further periods of study with teaching at St John's College, Annapolis (1940–2), Peabody Conservatory (1946–8), Columbia University (1948–50), Queens College, New York City (1955–6), and Yale (1960–2). His second string quartet won a Pulitzer Prize in 1960. His other works, often of great complexity, include two symphonies, four concertos, and several sonatas. |
