| biography:
| US general, born in Munfordville, Kentucky, USA. He trained at West Point, commanded the Alaska Defense Force (1940), and took part in operations for the recapture of the Aleutian Is (1942–3). He commanded the 10th army in the Central Pacific command, and in April 1945 led the invasion of Okinawa, where he was killed in action. |
