| Corporate executive, born in Richmond, Virginia, USA. Trained as an electrical engineer, he joined American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) in 1946. As president (1977–9) and chairman (1979–86), he presided over two sweeping reorganizations, the second after a 1982 anti-trust lawsuit forced the breakup of AT&T and the creation of the ‘Baby Bells’. |
