| biography:
| Judge, born in Newark, New Jersey, USA. He studied at Harvard, joined a Newark law firm, and specialized in labour law. He was appointed to the New Jersey Superior Court (1949) and the state Supreme Court (1952), and President Eisenhower appointed him to the US Supreme Court in 1956, where he took an active role in the ‘liberal’ decisions it handed down under the chief justiceship of Earl Warren. He continued to favour liberal policies until his retirement in 1990. |
