| biography:
| Educator and historian, born in Chautauqua, New York, USA. During a long and varied academic career, he published influential works on American intellectual history, including Backwoods Utopias (1950, revised 1970), and two works on what he described as the ‘aimlessness’ of progressive education in public schools, Educational Wastelands (1953) and The Restoration of Learning (1955). He also wrote on 18th-c American constitutional history. |
